SUN SURF × 葛飾北斎 SPECIAL EDITION “江戸五景”
"Five Landscapes of Edo" by Katsushika Hokusai
SS38469
National Treasure of Japan
Fugaku Sanjurokkei (Thirty-six views of Mt. Fuji) is one of Hokusai Katsushika's masterpieces of ukiyoe landscape painting. Among them, "Kanagawa Okinamiura" and "Triumphant Weather" are especially famous. Around 1831, a publisher named Nishimura Eijyudo published the series of 36 pictures. Later, 10 more were added, bringing the total to 46. As the name suggests, all of them depict Mt. Fuji (Fugaku), but Hokusai, who was influenced by Western painting, used perspective in composition and the then-popular tongue-in-cheek blue (Prussian blue) to create 46 unique depictions of Mt.
The "Five Views of Edo" aloha shirt, designed on the theme of Edo Tokyo, uses five of Hokusai's "Edo" motifs from the 46 paintings in his "Fugaku Sanjurokkei" series. In addition, inheriting Hokusai's insistence on using "indigo" pigment in his works at that time, this aloha shirt is also printed with indigo pigment.
